Texas Retired Teachers Association working for retirees

There is good news for all Teacher Retirement System annuitants. By mid-September 2019, the popularly called “TRS 13th check” will be deposited into their accounts. That 13th check is NOT just a whim on the part of TRS! As explained in the TRS notification letter, which each annuitant received, the one-time supplement resulted from the passage of Senate Bill 12 during the 2019 86th Legislature. And Senate Bill 12 was enacted because of the hard work and the strong voice of Texas retired school employees, the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA). Led by TRTA’s Legislative staff and Legislative Committee, the nearly 100,000 TRTA members kept in regular contact through months of emails, phone calls, personal visits, and handwritten letters to their respective Texas House and Senate members. For Comanche County those were Representative Dr. J.D. Sheffield and Senator Dawn Buckingham. In addition to the 13th check, the state will make gradual increases to the TRS Pension Fund from 6.8% to 8.25% by 2024 to insure its actuarial soundness, creating the opportunity for cost of living adjustments (COLA) in the future.

TRS pensioners, when you see that extra money in your accounts in mid-September, please remember to thank Dr. J.D. Sheffield and Senator Dawn Buckingham for their support. And, be sure to thank the Texas Association of Retired Teachers for their strong voice and advocacy for you! If you receive a TRS pension and are not a TRTA member, you need to join to become a part of the advocacy for the security of your future TRS Pension!
