Sara Mae Rex, precious wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, shed her earthly tent on September 9, 2021 and entered into Glory with her precious Savior Jesus Christ. She was 81.
We are truly grateful for the Linda, Marcia and the entire team at Eternal Spring of Gilbert and Hospice of West for all their love and care for sweet Sara.
Sara Mae Crouse was born on July 17, 1940 to Pearl and Maggie Crouse in Gary, Indiana before settling in Louisville, IL where she spent her afternoons playing ball and enjoying a happy, carefree childhood filled with love and music. Sara and her family were active at Hoosier Prairie Baptist Church where she sang and played piano. At North Clay High School, Sara was voted prom queen by her peers. The crown was eventually relinquished to the runner-up when Sara politely refused to dance at prom, being true to her Baptist roots.
She moved to Phoenix and graduated from Grand Canyon College in 1962 with a degree in music and music performance. To no one’s surprise, she was voted Campus Favorite. While at Grand Canyon, she met Ken Brittain, an engineering student at ASU. They were soon married and moved to Huntsville AL for Ken’s job at NASA where they had their first son, Todd. The young family then moved to Albuquerque, NM where their second son, Bill, was born.
In October 1968, Ken was with three other men on an elk-spotting flight when their small plane disappeared outside of Santa Fe. A massive, national search was launched for the men with no results. The plane was not to be found for 5 years (The search is chronicled in THE BIG ONE, a book by Bruce Gallaher).
During the years spent searching for the plane, Sara found strength in the Lord and her church and met Jack Rex through a mutual friend. Jack jumped into the search, there relationship grew and they were married in 1970. The plane was finally found in 1972 by two young hikers.
Sara and Jack were active at Eastern Hills Baptist where she played piano and organ. In 1995 they moved to Comanche, TX to take care of Jack’s mom. Sara also played piano for First Baptist Church in Comanche before retiring in 2018. Her days were filled with quietness and prayer and her gentle-spirited ways.
When Sara was diagnosed with Dementia, she and Jack moved to Phoenix to be nearer to family. Her life slowed down even more and she enjoyed playing the piano and seeing her family, especially the great-grand babies!
Sara is survived by her husband of 50 years, Jack Rex, sister Darlene Garrett (Bill), brother Dale Crouse (Jeanette), son Todd Brittain, son Bill Brittain (Kim), stepson Stuart Rex (Misty), stepdaughter Tawni Cyprus (Tom), four granddaughters, two grandsons, two great-grandsons and many nieces and nephews whom she loved!
A memorial service will held at Redemption Gilbert honoring Sara on September 30, 2021 at 10:30 in the morning. Condolences can be sent to Jack Rex at Eternal Spring, 940 E Williams Field Rd, Gilbert, AZ 85295
